The 2014 Reserve Chardonnay is only the third vintage of what the Deep Woods winemaking team see as the ‘rebirth’ of this wine, and has become one of the most sought after wines from Deep Woods Estate. The 2014 is a stellar follow up to the 2013 Reserve Chardonnay which took James Halliday’s Chardonnay of the year and scored 98 points.
Winemaker Vintage Notes
“Vintage 2014 has proven to be an excellent Chardonnay vintage. A steady harvest allowed considered picking decisions providing fruit with excellent acid structure and depth of flavour. Hand-picked fruit from two select central Margaret River vineyards was critical to this blend, with a focus on producing Chardonnay with texture and fine acid. A minimalist approach is used in our winery, including whole bunch pressing, wild fermentation and gentle lees stirring in a mixture of new and seasoned French oak. The individual parcels were kept separate and aged on lees until the final wine was blended for bottling, enabling us to create a wine of elegance, depth and complexity.” Julian Langworthy, Deep Woods Estate head winemaker.
Mid-light straw with tinges of green, the nose offers excellent fresh stone fruit and citrus blossom notes, combined with warm straw, cedar spice and chipped oyster shell aromas. The palate is pure and elegant, displaying stone fruit, lime zest and jasmine. A fine acid backbone combines the lees-derived texture to produce a wine of depth, power and complexity.
